Signs You Have Rodents (and What to Do)

How to spot mice and rats early, before a small problem becomes a big one.

Rodents are secretive. By the time most people are certain they have mice or rats, the problem has usually been building for a while. Catching the early signs matters, because a pair of mice can become a serious infestation in a matter of weeks, and rodents do real damage while they are here. Here is what to watch for.

Droppings in quiet places

Small, dark droppings in the backs of cabinets, in drawers, along walls, or in the garage are usually the first hard evidence. Fresh droppings are dark and soft, older ones are gray and crumbly, which tells you whether the activity is current.

Gnaw marks and chewed packaging

Rodents chew constantly. Look for gnaw marks on food boxes and bags, on wood trim, and, most concerning, on electrical wiring, which is a genuine fire risk. Shredded paper, insulation, or fabric usually means they are nesting nearby.

Scratching or scurrying at night

Mice and rats are most active after dark. Scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds inside walls, ceilings, or the attic once the house goes quiet is one of the most common ways people first notice them.

A musky smell

A persistent musky, ammonia-like odor in an enclosed space like a pantry, closet, or basement can point to rodents, and it usually gets stronger as the population grows.

What to do about it

Rodent control is not a spray-and-go job. A few traps might catch the boldest mouse, but they do nothing about the entry points the rest are using or the nest already established inside. Effective control means inspecting to find how they are getting in, sealing those entry points, and running a proper trapping or baiting program until the activity stops. That is why our rodent service starts with a free inspection: we find the source, then fix it.
